Dog Accidentally Injured Person Owner Responsible MN Lawyer

IS DOG OWNER RESPONSIBLE IF DOG ACCIDENTALLY INJURES A PERSON?

Answer: Usually yes. The law in Minnesota is clear. A dog owner is responsible for ANY injury caused by the dog, even if their dog injures the person by accident.

347.22 DAMAGES, OWNER LIABLE.

If a dog, without provocation, attacks or injures any person who is acting peaceably in any place where the person may lawfully be, the owner of the dog is liable in damages. The term “owner” includes any person harboring or keeping a dog. However, the owner shall be primarily liable. The term “dog” includes both male and female of the canine species. In other words, the dog doesn’t have to bite you. The owner is responsible even if their dog accidentally injures you.

Our lawyers have represented many people injured by a dog by accident. For example, we have had several cases where a dog accidentally knocked someone over. In one case, a person was standing by a stairway when a dog came in from outside and brushed against her, causing her to fall down the stairs. In another case, our lawyer represented a person when the dog suddenly darted in front of them and they tripped on the dog. Our attorneys have also represented people injured in a bike accident caused by a dog, usually where the dog jumps on or at the bike and knocks the rider off.
