The number of Americans killed in wrong-way traffic accidents has been creeping up in recent years.There were approximately 500 fatalities per year in recent years a new AAA study says. AAA found three common factors in cases of fatal wrong-way driving crashes vs. ‘right-way’ crashes: Alcohol impairment, older age, and driving without a passenger. Of course, the first two should be familiar to anybody with even a passing familiarity with crash statistics.
In wrong-way accidents involving multiple cars, AAA found that intoxication was a common denominator in the driver going against the flow of traffic. Alcohol impairment is, by far, the single most significant factor in the majority of wrong-way driving crashes. This unfortunately has not changed since the NTSB first issued its Wrong-Way Driving special investigation, according to the report.
In addition, drivers above the age of 70 are also more likely to be involved in wrong-way incidents. However, they also found greater risk for people driving alone.’A passenger’s presence may offer some protection against being a wrong-way driver. Nearly 87% of wrong-way drivers were alone,’ AAA said. ‘Passengers may alert drivers that they are entering a one-way road. Also, the passenger can help the driver take corrective action before a crash occurs.’
